Swimming Pool and Spa Builder
Swimming pool and spa builders install and construct in-ground and above-ground swimming pools and spas in both residential and commercial locations.
Much of the work is done outdoors and involves driving to job locations.
TASKS
- work with designers, architects, landscape architects and contractors to construct residential and commercial swimming pools or spas
- read and interpret building plans and specifications
- apply and finish sprayed concrete or fibreglass lining
- apply interior and waterproof surfaces
- install tiles and coping pavers
- install subsoil draining systems, filtration equipment and sanitisation systems
- install reticulation systems and pool plumbing
- prepare construction contracts
Swimming pool and spa builders may perform the following tasks:

- enjoy practical and outdoor work
- able to cope with the physical demands of the job
- able to work independently and as part of a team
- able to follow precise directions
Interest Area
EDUCATION & TRAINING
To become a swimming pool and spa builder you usually have to complete a VOC qualification in swimming pool building and installation, swimming pool and spa construction, installation and maintenance, or swimming pool and spa building. Entry to these courses usually requires Year 10. You may be able to study through distance education. See the Learning pathways section for further information.
You can also become a swimming pool and spa builder by completing a traineeship in Swimming Pool and Spa Building.
Entry requirements may vary, but employers generally require Year 10.
Additional Information
In NSW, swimming pool and spa builders must either hold, or work under someone who holds, a contractors licence for swimming pool building. Contact NSW Fair Trading for more information.
To perform electrical work you will need to apply for a restricted electrical licence. For more information, see www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au or www.actpla.act.gov.au.
A drivers licence is usually required.
