COL's Guestbook (ARCHIVED) - Your Comments

From Brad Thomson Mon, 20 Nov 1995 00:24:43 +1100

I just thought I'd drop you a note to let to thank you for your web page. I am currently unemployed after leaving a comfortable position, for one which turned out to be a nightmare. I am now unemployed and until visiting your web page, was getting more and more depressed, ready to sit on the dole and do nothing. After browsing the site and capturing some information, I am now once again going to make an effort to get out there, and find a job. Thanks :-)

Thanks for the positive vibes Brad - we really appreciate it. Glad we could help put some into you too! All the best to you and good luck!

I am completing my Ph.D at Yale University in the United States, and am interested in Faculty positions in Australian Universities. My field of specialization is French and Francophone African Literature. I am a British citizen and my wife is American and Canadian. We would enjoy living in Australia, and I have been using your services to try and access job listings in universities. I will continue to monitor the information your service provides. Thank you.

Hi Dominic, and "welcome" to Australia! As you are aware, Careers OnLine is in a "trial" phase and is very responsive to the needs/wishes of it's users. So, I'll work on some pointers to those job listings for you - there are a couple that might help you.

Keep an eye on the "Careers OnLine - What's new" section - soon - for an announcement on when I've got it together! I'm also only just starting to work on Australian unis to get "stuff" onto Careers OnLine, so detailed info about them might take some time.

I don't really know about French and Francophone African Literature being all that popular in Oz...? The French themselves haven't been all that popular around here lately :)

All the best, and hope to see you "down under" some day!

Great, fantastic even. The Labour market in Australia has needed this for along time. My company, Brisbane Information Technology Centre is a training organisation aimed at the unemployed and disadvantaged people. We are involved in alot of employment counselling to do with information technology and computer technology. This site is a valuable asset to our work. Thanks. By the way if you are interested in the Meyers-Briggs Personality test it is online at sunsite.unc.edu/jembin/mb.pl

Roger Hawcroft hawcroft@xenios.qldnet.com.au Mon Dec 25 13:21:10 EST 1995

A great web site - attractive, useful, easy to use. Congratulations!

Bob Flynn flynn@capital.net Sat Jan 13 13:20:32 EST 1996

I am a business teacher at Columbia High School in East Greenbush, NY USA. One of the courses I teach is a career internship course where students intern with a mentor in the student's chosen field. I have used some of this web site material in class and it was very helpful! Career exploration for all students is critical. must investigate career options at an early age and make choices. If they leave career to chance, they could lose.

Craig Thomson jascraig@geko.com.au Sun Jan 14 00:04:30 EST 1996

One of the best site on the Net! It's not only well designed but also contacts a huge amount of information for those of us seeking employment. I'm going to keep coming back to your site for tips, leads and any more marvellous tools like your Resume Generator. All the best.....are YOU employing?

Sue Blake sue@welearn.com.au Sun Jan 21 08:49:33 EST 1996

You have a great site here, and I'm sure it has helped many to find good careers, and many organisations to find good workers. This is more than a web site, it's a well thought out research project of immediate benefit to many!

Greg Smith Smith@Research.Allied.com Mon Mar 4 12:27:10 EST 1996

Nice site. A thought: How about including a listing of executive recruiters in Australia which separates those who work on a retainer basis from the contingency people? Think lots of searchers would be grateful. regards, Greg Smith

Matt Holmes Matthew.Holmes@jcu.edu.au Fri Mar 15 14:14:16 EST 1996

Great site, and the more the merrier. Suggestion - provide an area for unemployed / students to download / e-mail resumes to (no cost), and also allowing employers to upload same (at cost?). This will assist all those looking for employment.

Stephen Spry careers@careersonline.com.au Mon Mar 18 08:03:21 EST 1996

We do have an area similar to what Matt suggests -- our Positions Wanted section allows people to post (and view) a short summary of their skills etc at no cost!

Anyone can use it and, if prepared properly, will serve a better function than simply downloading complete resumes (and take up less space on our server).

The idea is that if an employer is willing to make any further contact then they will, based on the outline they have viewed. It also avoids the problem (I feel it's a problem) of people posting names, ages, addresses, phone numbers etc to the world. I'm not too keen on that!

Dave Larder slarder@merlin.net.au Wed Mar 20 12:16:40 EST 1996

This is a great idea for helping people to gain and maintain employment. I will be visiting again.

Keep up the good work

I like the concept of your page. I look forward to seeing more computer industry jobs available in the future.

I like the site.

Cheers

Tim Washko trw117@psu.edu. Tue Apr 2 05:11:50 EST 1996

I just wanted to thank everybody there at Careers Online. The information I received has helped me gain some perspective on where I am going in life. I am 19 years old and am currently attending The University of Pennsylvania. As a freshman I had no idea of what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. The information that Careers Online gave me, helped me to understand myself better and helped to point me in the right direction. So, once again, Thank-You.

Connie Elliott celliott@1stresource.com Sun Apr 7 11:45:44 EST 1996

My husband and I are considering moving from the US to Australia to work for a few years. Careers OnLine has been the first homepage we've found with some really interesting Australian jobs. We'll be frequenting your homepage in the future in hope to find opportunities for us both in your country.

Luke Smithers Smithej@firn.edu Wed Apr 10 08:15:38 EST 1996

I don't have an Email address. I'm on my moms Password. This was exactally what I needed for my research paper. Careers in computers. Thanks

Charles Ford ford3169@traveller.com Thu Apr 11 15:33:01 EST 1996

You people realy have it all together dont you.. I think that this will be the next medium in which the community will both find job placement and expand their own personal skills in finding work.. This is the first time I have used Careers Online and I know that I will be referencing this in the future.. Well done, I think this has to be on of the easiest and helpful web-sites i have visited to date..

ps. Thankyou for the top resume.

Alain Saintpo asaintpo@innet.be Thu Apr 18 14:31:59 EST 1996

I already came back on your site several times and I am finding it very well done and useful (I already gave the link around me).

Stephen Gunther sgunther@scu.edu.au Thu Apr 18 14:34:36 EST 1996

*Cool* is the best description for your site. I teach career development, mainly for Skillshare, but also privately. I love the area, and have gained particular inspiration from Bolles work, which I put into workshop format. I will certainly add your address to my list of resources for workshop attendees. Do you have a FAQ of the whole lot, so I can print it off to give them an idea of what is available there.

Khurshid Khan kkhan@tassie.net.au Fri May 3 23:50:31 EST 1996

Could you perhaps include a comprehensive questionnaire which will, ideally, help you find the right job/career path for people?

I wouldn't mind paying for such aservice!

Lenny Eagles lennny@sydney.dialix.oz.au Wed May 15 14:22:34 EST 1996

Hi Steve :-) Yes I have finally made the connection and look forward to introducing students to this service!!

Jeff Hopp jhopp@albina.com Fri May 17 11:27:01 EST 1996

I am fairly new to the world of cyberspace, and enjoy the opportunity to use your services to continue my search for "greener pastures". We have recently placed an announcement for positions soon to become available at our company, and find that it is already generating quite a list of qualified prospects. It sure beats shelling it out for classified want ads. Thanks again, and I'll be on the lookout...

Vance Rekdal rekdal@sendit.nodak.edu.com Mon Jun 3 02:36:23 EST 1996

I am a Vocational Counselor at Steele-Dawson High School in Steele, N.D. I know I will make excellent use of this web-site. Thanks

Peter Baker peter@mypostbox Mon Jun 3 22:20:24 EST 1996

I have a friend interested in a job in TV so I thought I'd check out the page. Great idea well presented.

Stephen Adams svadams@ozemail.com.au Wed Jun 5 23:59:17 EST 1996

The system you have put together seem quite user friendly and easy to use. I was able to find what I was looking for relatively easily although the searching sometimes gave some funny results.

Ian Batley ianbatley@auslig.gov.au Mon Jun 17 13:37:54 EST 1996

An interesting concept which certainly adds a lot of potential for any job seeker. Well done.

Elena Leonoff INFO@staffsol.com.au Fri Jun 21 10:42:06 EST 1996

Great site. Even the frames are functional without being irritating! I'm with a recruitment agency called Staff Solutions, in Melbourne, specialising in computing jobs (our own site is at http://www.staffsol.com.au) Just checking out your "jobs wanted" section to see if anyone might match our current vacancies. Suggestion: please encourage people to state *where they are*. I see some there with great skills, but the only clue to location is their email, presumably somewhere in the USA. One says that he's looking for work in Colorado. Please include a field in the form for "Location"! And overseas job-seekers should say whether they have permanent residency or a work visa, when they will be arriving in Australia, which city they want to work in. Otherwise, great site.

Skip Scott sjscott@crems.rockwell.com Wed Jul 10 13:33:34 EST 1996

Your page is very well organized and easy to browse. Just thought I'd let you know your efforts are appreciated.

Stephanie Brennan sothcan@ozemail.com.au Fri Jul 19 22:14:11 EST 1996

Congratulations, this is a great site on the web. I would like it if you could give me some info on some more careers because I am interested for future in life.

Thankyou.

Blackmagic gregrtr@ozemail.com.au Mon Jul 22 11:44:41 EST 1996

I think you've done realy well, but you need a part for kids (you know 14 and over. Some of us need money too you know. I also reckon that there should be more jobs for kids cause i know lots of kids that live on the streets who just need a fair chance.sorry if you did have a bit for kids and i didnt find it cause theres just so much to go through these days. But dont worry i think you did relly well it's good.

Stephen Spry careers@careersonline.com.au Mon Jul 22 13:02:37 EST 1996

It's funny that Blackmagic should say that...

Most of the workshop materials on COL are adapted from the materials we used to teach careers to students in years 9-11.

The other area kids can use is the FREE positions wanted notices. Let the world know you're looking for a job! Just spend some time in preparing what you want to say before you put it there (and check the spelling!)

We DID have a "Youth" positions vacant/wanted section at the start of the year, but it wasn't being used! Maybe it's time to bring it back again?????

Thanks for the good thoughts about COL. I do hope we help some of those kids you know (but how do they get onto the 'net?)

Eva jenkins websilk@nmaa.org Wed Jul 31 11:47:16 EST 1996

A great page. Great design. Great information. Well done.

Hartmut Grieb hartmutg@melbpc.org.au Mon Aug 19 17:21:38 EST 1996

Congratulations! Great concept.Any feedback on the success rate? Being a 50+ Construction Contract Administrator, applications are just a regular routine in a country like Australia which does not appreciate age/experience. Keep up the good work! Greetings.
