Work Experience
Work Experience lets you "try before you jump" into a career. You won't get paid (and you will need to get accident and injury insurance cover) but a week or two of work experience may save you heading down dead ends if the career doesn't really suit you.
If the career does suit you, then your work experience will give you a head start in securing a job, or gaining entry into a training course, because of:
- the experience itself, which demonstrates your interest in the chosen career (an essential point employers look for),
- a work reference and,
- useful contact names.
If you are at school, ask your Careers Counsellor and/or vocational course teacher about work experience.
Work experience is often built into many tertiary courses. Ask before you enrol about this option (or ask your teacher).
Adults should enquire with employment agencies and community groups who often run government sponsored programs to provide work experience for adults.
Before you approach an employer, find out how to get ready!
